Candidates for Breast Augmentation
Candidates for breast augmentation are healthy women who have realistic expectations about how the procedure will affect their lives. Women choose this procedure for a variety of personal reasons, which may include any of the following:
- Increasing the size of naturally small breasts
- Restoring volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight changes
- Balancing uneven breast size and shape
While breast augmentation usually does not prevent women from breastfeeding, the breasts often end up sagging and losing volume after pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you plan to have a baby in the near future, Dr. Sasaki may recommend waiting to have breast augmentation to avoid compromising your results.
Breast Augmentation or Lift?
Breast augmentation does not correct sagging. If your breasts exhibit moderate to significant sagging, a breast lift may be required along with breast augmentation to elevate and reshape the breasts. Some patients may select a breast lift without augmentation if they have sufficient breast volume or do not want implants.
Your Breast Augmentation Consultation
Your decision to have breast augmentation begins with a personal, in-depth consultation with Dr. Sasaki. He will review your medical history including the results of any prior mammograms to assess your breast volume and other radiologic characteristics that may influence your procedure. Dr. Sasaki has fellowship training focused on breast cancer and will review any possible risks with you.

Few plastic surgeons can match Dr. Sasaki's combination of expertise, compassion, and experience. He's a distinguished educator and a renowned innovator whose work and research have influenced a generation of plastic surgeons. Dr. Sasaki will work with you to make the improvements you desire.
During your physical examination, precise anatomical measurements will be obtained to guide Dr. Sasaki in selecting the optimal breast implant size and shape that will ensure your enhanced breasts complement your figure.
Standard photographs will be taken to more fully illustrate your concerns. Dr. Sasaki encourages you to bring in any other photographs that demonstrate the new look you wish to achieve.
Choosing Breast Implants
Dr. Sasaki uses only FDA-approved implants. Breast implants are made of medical-grade, biocompatible silicone shells that are filled with a sterile saline solution at the time of surgery or are pre-filled with a silicone gel. He will discuss in detail the differences between various implant options including:
- Saline, silicone gel, and highly cohesive silicone gel implants
- Round and anatomically shaped
- Textured and smooth shells
Each type of implant has certain unique advantages and disadvantages about which you must be advised to allow you to make a well-informed selection. As a past consultant for breast implant device companies, Dr. Sasaki will use his extensive experience and knowledge about implants to help you through the decision-making process.
It is important to be aware that breast implants are not guaranteed to last a lifetime and may require replacement in the future. Since pregnancy, significant weight fluctuations, or menopause may alter the appearance of your augmented breasts, maintenance and regular breast examinations are required to evaluate the integrity of your implants. A baseline mammogram is recommended prior to surgery to serve as a reference for future comparisons.
Implant Placement
Breast augmentation involves surgical placement of implants into precisely tailored pockets behind the breast tissue. The implant may be placed beneath the pectoralis muscle (submuscular position) or above the muscle (subglandular position). Dr. Sasaki prefers the submuscular placement in most cases because it:
- Provides more coverage for the implant
- Decreases the risk of capsular contracture (firming of the implant by contraction of its surrounding scar tissue)
- Minimizes visible implant irregularities
- Gives the breasts a more natural feel and appearance
Incision Placement
Dr. Sasaki offers the following choices for incision placement:
- Around the lower half of the areola (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple)
- Within a natural fold of the armpit
- Near the crease under the breast
Dr. Sasaki recommends incision placement based on the type of implant selected, degree of enlargement desired, patient’s anatomy, and scar selection.
What to Expect
Breast augmentation may be performed in an accredited outpatient surgical facility or a hospital. The decision for anesthesia is based on the requirements of your specific procedure, considerations of the doctor, and your personal preferences. Dr. Sasaki makes the incisions and creates a space behind each breast for the implant (the pocket). After inserting the trial implants and ensuring that he has achieved the desired breast size and shape, Dr. Sasaki then selects the permanent implants, closes the incisions with dissolvable sutures, and seals them with surgical tape.
Recovery & Results
A circular dressing, garment, or support bra is placed around the chest immediately after surgery to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal. You may shower after the dressings are removed on the third postoperative day. Postoperative directions will be given to you as to the level and types of activities you can safely perform. Plan to take it easy for 3 to 6 weeks and avoid engaging in any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise.
The results of breast augmentation are immediately noticeable, but full results—meaning the breasts have softened and settled into their natural position–are typically reached within 3 months of surgery. Individual experiences vary. Incision lines tend to soften and fade over the next year.
