Liposuction Q & A
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that involves removing excess fat from problem areas.
The healthiest way to attain a fit, toned body is through healthy eating habits and safe exercise programs. Despite these efforts, some individuals may still retain areas of localized, stubborn fat deposits that don't respond to exercise.
Areas that liposuction can treat include:
- Cheeks
- Neck
- Breasts
- Upper arms
- Abdomen
- Back
- Buttocks
- Thighs
- Knees
- Ankles
If you're concerned by the extra fat bulges on your face or body, Dr. Sasaki can use liposuction techniques to remove them.
How does liposuction work?
There are several techniques Dr. Sasaki can use to perform successful liposuction:
Traditional liposuction
The original approach to liposuction involves passing a hollow tube called a cannula back and forth under negative pressure to remove fat cells.
Power-assisted liposuction (PAL)
PAL removes fat by passing a mechanically moving hollow cannula back and forth under negative pressure to sculpt the fatty layers.
Water-jet assisted liposuction
Water jets use gentle water pressure to detach fat cells from the surrounding tissues and suction them away.
Ultrasonic liposuction
Using ultrasonic sound waves and ultrasound guidance, Dr. Sasaki liquefies fat cells in the targeted area before their removal.
Laser-assisted liposuction
The laser energy heats the targeted fat cells and destroys them.
Dr. Sasaki also uses liposculpture techniques to move fat around instead of removing it, giving you a more toned and shapely appearance.
What should I do if I'm interested in having liposuction?
Your first step is a consultation with Dr. Sasaki. He reviews your complete medical history and performs a detailed physical examination. Special considerations may be necessary if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, or you've previously had surgery in the target areas.
Dr. Sasaki goes over the procedure with you and explains how liposuction can improve your body contours by removing excess areas of fat deposits. It's important that you understand what results you're likely to achieve before undergoing liposuction.
Dr. Sasaki also performs a Futrex® body composition analysis that helps determine your ideal weight and body mass index (BMI) and provides a direct measurement of body fat (essential, reserve, and excess body fat).
Futrex’s superior near-infrared technology also provides you with a personalized body metrics report of nutritional and exercise information to give you a complete picture of your fitness and wellness.
Are there alternatives to liposuction?
If you're not ready to undergo liposuction surgery, Dr. Sasaki offers noninvasive options like CoolSculpting®, which uses Cryolipolysis™ to freeze fat cells. The treated cells break down over the following months and disappear, leaving you with a more refined shape.
Dr. Sasaki also offers KYBELLA® injectable treatments to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin (submental fat) by physically destroying fat cells.
